FAQ

Common Questions About International Contractor Insurance

Is DBA insurance required for all US government overseas contracts?
Yes. The Defense Base Act requires all US government contractors and subcontractors working outside the US on US government contracts to carry DBA workers' compensation insurance. This applies to USAID, DoD, Department of State, and other federal agency contracts. Failure to carry DBA is a federal contract violation.
Does my domestic workers' compensation policy cover overseas employees?
No. Standard US workers' compensation policies terminate at the US border. Employees working internationally need either DBA insurance (for US government contracts) or Foreign Voluntary Workers Compensation (FVWC) for commercial international projects.
What countries can you provide coverage for?
We place coverage for contractors working in over 140 countries. Some high-risk regions (active conflict zones, OFAC-sanctioned countries) require specialty war risk or political risk endorsements, which we can also arrange.
How quickly can you issue DBA insurance certificates?
In most cases, we can quote DBA coverage within 24–48 hours of receiving your application. Binding and certificate issuance typically occurs within 1–3 business days thereafter, though complex projects may require additional underwriting time.
What is Foreign Voluntary Workers Compensation (FVWC)?
FVWC is the commercial-sector equivalent of DBA insurance. It covers employees working internationally on non-US government projects. Benefits mirror DBA/US workers' comp, providing medical, disability, and death benefits for covered employees injured overseas.
